We are proud to announce the publication of our first book. This is a major 136 now 144 page hardback entitled SOUTHERN SUNSET '67 and has been written by the acknowledged expert on the end of steam operation on British Railways Southern Region which occurred on July 9th 1967.
John Bird has written three previous books on the subject, SOUTHERN STEAM SURRENDER, SOUTHERN STEAM SUNSET AND WATERLOO SUNSET, all long out of print, but each described as the definitive works on those exciting but ultimately sad events in the mid-1960s. Few who were alive at the time can forget those days of mixed emotions when steam gave way to electric and diesel traction, going out in a blaze of glory with a large following of enraptured enthusiasts.
This new book is very different to its predecessors-it is a pictorial tribute to every one of the 122 main line steam locos that survived on January 1st 1967, as well as those on the Isle of Wight and in Departmental Service, backed up with plenty of factual information, informative captions and a special feature on the last weekend of steam, the aftermath and ultimate survival of some of those locomotives.
With nearly 300 top quality photographs, the majority never seen in print before, this book represents amazing value and will make a wonderful gift to any railway enthusiast.
